The Nessmuk Knife
George Washington Sears was a sports writer for Forest and Stream (now Field and Stream) in the 1880's and the father of ultralight camping. His stories brought main-stream popularity to self-guided canoe camping which were written under his pen name, "Nessmuk".

Sears belived that there were great health benefits from being outdoors. He was a frail man who wanted to show that anybody could go canoeing and camping. George also wrote one of BHK's most favorite general books on camping called WoodCraft in 1884 and it is still in print today.

Mr. Sears favored a "trinity" system of cutting tools, a hatchet, a fixed blade and a folder. He preferred thin knives with a keen edge in a usable length. George liked a smaller knife. One designed for cutting effiency was highly favored.
